Awaken the Writer: A Journey into Creative Expression

Welcome, Creative Dreamer,

My name is Linda J. Wagner, and I’m so thrilled you’re here. Whether you’ve been writing for years or just beginning to explore the idea, one thing is true: you are a creative writer. Sometimes all it takes is a spark - a nudge of inspiration - to help you begin.

Creative writing is one of the most fulfilling paths we can walk. It expands the mind, nourishes the spirit, and adds joy to everyday life. Whether it’s poetry, fiction, songwriting, blogging, or journaling - writing connects us with our inner world and helps us understand our outer one.

Over the years, my own writing has brought me healing, inspiration, and purpose. I’ve published two original faerie tale children’s books - works born of daydreams and divine inspiration. I believe with all my heart that if we can imagine it, we can write it. And when the time is right, those dreams can be shared with the world.

Today, I’d like to help you begin your own writing journey. Below are a few foundational lessons and tools to get your creative energy flowing.

Getting Started: Building Your Creative Practice

  1. Know Your Genre(s): Start by identifying the type of writing that excites you—poetry, fantasy, romance, thriller, fable, legend, or something else. You’re welcome to explore more than one!

  2. Create a Writing Schedule: Discipline is the companion of inspiration. Choose a time and space that allows you to connect with your creative voice.

  3. Freewriting & Brainstorming: Begin with a stream-of-thought exercise. Let your imagination flow without judgment - no editing, just expression.

  4. Outlines & Organizers: Even the most magical stories benefit from structure. Try an outline, a diagram, or even an illustration to visually map your idea.

  5. Creative Writing Warm-Up Exercises:

    1. Listen to instrumental music and write what it makes you feel or imagine.

    2. Choose a piece of art and write a fictional story based on what you see.

  6. Story Elements to Explore:

Theme, Exposition, Imagery, Character Development, Setting, Conflict, Resolution, and Foreshadowing.

Introductory Lessons

Lesson 1:

  • Define your genre(s)

  • Free write a story overview or summary

  • List potential characters, plotlines, settings, and themes

  • Begin your exposition - the story’s opening

Lesson 2:

  • Draft your first chapter(s), poem, scene, or song

  • Let it rest and revisit it later with fresh eyes

  • Ask yourself: Would I want to keep reading this?
